Despite a productive career, Deodato will always be best-known for a 1972 hit record, his catchy adaptation of "Also Sprach Zarathurstra (Theme From 2001: A Space Odyssey)." He began his career playing in a popular local rock group as a teenager. At 17, he was asked to arrange for a recording session orchestra and, despite never having written a score before, the teenager succeeded at quickly learning what was necessary. Although Deodato spent time studying engineering, he eventually decided to make a career in music due to the popularity of his writing. After working in Brazil's studios, he moved to the United States in 1967. Deodato wrote for the American studios and was involved in the still fertile bossa nova movement. He wrote arrangements for Astrud Gilberto, contributed three charts to Wes Montgomery's Down Here on the Ground, and was soon working for major names in several fields including Aretha Franklin, Bette Midler, Frank Sinatra, Earth, Wind & Fire, Stanley Turrentine, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, among others. With the release of Prelude in 1973 (his first solo album and the one that included the "Theme From 2001"), Deodato became a major name for a time. He recorded sets for CTI, MCA, and Warner Bros. through 1979, although the efforts tended to be over-arranged and none caught on as well as Prelude. Since that time, Deodato was mostly outside of jazz, working as a producer and arranger behind the scenes, including for Kool & the Gang during 1979-1983. Som Imaginário (Imaginary Music) is a Brazilian band from the 70s. They joined together to support Milton Nascimento in his first record and shows. Their style comes from jazz, classic and rock until popular Brazilian music and bossa nova, with strong Beatles influence. They recorded three albums in the 70s and an album live with Milton Nascimento in 1974 releasing them in a boxset in 1997, but it was limited edition. Famous people were Imaginary Music: Naná Vasconcelos, Robertinho Silva, José Rodrix, Toninho Horta, Wagner Tiso, Tavito and Marco Antônio Araújo. This last person recorded four very progressive albums later, but unfortunately died in 1986. The first and second Som Imaginário albums follow the psychedelic line with Beatles and pop influences. José Rodrix left the band, and Wagner Tiso (ex W-Boys jazz band) leaded the band for the new album. The third album "A Matança do Porco" (The slaughter of the pig) is an all instrumental album (with voices but no lyrics), following the fusion and symphonic direction. Some people prefer their first phase, others the third album. Spawning from Brazilian psychedelia and Anglo-American hard-rock, MÓDULO 1000 represented a fusion of both sonorities, coming up with something new in the Brazilian musical scene. The Rio de Janeiro group, featuring Luiz Paulo Simas (keyboards and vocals, later with VIMANA and O TERÇO), Eduardo Leal (bass guitar), Daniel Cardona Romani (guitar and vocals) and Candinho (drums, later with VIMANA), would put out only one album, 1971's "Não Fale Com Paredes", a clear display of their musical influences, ranging from BLACK SABBATH and QUATERMASS to OS MUTANTES through early PINK FLOYD. Totally fuzz guitar, a lot of atmospheric and spacy keyboards, good bass and drums. The production was very poor, but this helped to give the songs a dark atmosphere despite the happy and crazy vocals. Luis Simas was the first brazilian musician to buy a synthesizer. The lyrics are a mix of protest against the military dictatorship and things totally nonsense.Heavy influences of Black Sabbath, but this is progressive rock for sure! All great european bands of late 60's and early 70's are inspirations for Módulo 1000. Tarkus, the heaviest of all bands from Peru, was formed in 1971. The members were Peruvians Alex Nathanson and Walo Carillo (the great drummer from Los Holy’s) and Argentinians Dario Gianella and Guillermo Van Locke. It was Guillermo Van Locke, the group’s bass player, who approached two members of Telegraph Avenue: Alex Nathanson, singer and acoustic guitar, and Walo Carrillo, drums and percussion. Tarkus was recorded from April 3rd to May 16th, 1972. Fifty copies were made, all of them test pressings with the standard MAG label, most to be given away as promotional material and a few copies to be sold in stores, making it the most saught-after album from South America. Tarkus is band from Gothenburg, existing of Kalle Lilja (Guitars a.etc. devices, keyboards, piano), KDW (Bass and Voice), Jesper “JeppeBil” Pihl (Drums and Percussion) and Jonathan “The Man” Rinvall (Rhythm Guitar). In late 2006, Kalle Lilja quited the band and the rest of the members decided to split up. One of the first progressive bands from Brazil, O Terço (meaning rosary beads) first formed in 1968, but didn't hit its stride until the mid '70s. Personnel changes would become part of the bands dynamic, with Sergio Hinds assuming the Robert Fripp (or Chis Squire) role of band anchor. The group owed a lot of its early sound to such Italian favorites as Locanda Delle Fate, Quella Veccia Locanda, and Premiata Forneria Marconi. They also manged to mix in other styles, like folk, heavy metal, and funk. On the first album, O Terço was not yet full on prog, but it is a seminal work in the history Brazilian progressive music. There are obvious influences of the Moody Blues, and Pink Floyd. "O Terço II" would see them moving from Psychedelic to heavier sounds, along the lines of King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, and even Black Sabbath. It was 1975's "Criaturas Da Noite" that became a monumental success. It was a big hit, gave Brazil its first classic prog album, and solidified O Terço's place in music history. In the '80s, the band began to tour the United States and Europe. This would make them more popular in other parts of the world, than they were at home. They continued to release albums into the late '90s. Many times trying to experiment with different styles. A possible reformation of the classic "Criaturas Da Noite" lineup was in the works in 2001/2002, but an unexpected death postponed the idea. Brazilian band The Bubbles became the toast of the underground Rio de Janeiro scene, backing Tropicalist singer Gal Costa's residence at the Sucata night club in 1970. They won the "Best Band of the Festival" award at the VII FIC of 1971 (International Festival of Songs), the same year they appeared on Leno's "Vida y obra de Johnny McCartney" album. After venturing to England to attend the Isle of Wight Festival, they decided to experiment with a heavier sound, more akin to UK bands of that era (Deep Purple, Cream, King Crimson, Humble Pie, with a little Beatles' "White Album" in for good measure) than that of their Brazilian cohorts. At this point they changed their name to A Bolha. Still loaded with verve, swagger, and fueled by drugs, they recorded their first album, which has secured a permanent place as one of the best hard psych rock albums to ever emerge from South America. The LP, "Um Passo a frente" (A step forward), was released in 1973 by the Continental label, in a gatefold cover which was quite luxurious for the era. This masterpiece, now impossibly hard to find as an original, certainly made a name for A Bolha in the pantheon of 1970's Brazilian rock. But success in the early 1970's was not like it had once been in the old Jovem Guarda or Tropicalist days, when bands had weekly TV shows to help them become well-known nationwide—and eventually, worldwide. In other words, the meager abilities of Continental to promote the album made it a collector's item, not the fate a band would actively seek for their recordings. Luckily, we at Lion Productions are able to present these recordings to the world all over again, with the additional benefit of a 20-page booklet with band history, photos, and comments on the songs by band leader Renato Ledeira. Includes both sides of the band's infamous hard-rocking 1971 single as bonus tracks. VELUDO started as VELUDO ELETRICO; they're Brasilian band formed in '74 and disbanded in '78. They have no official releases save for the live recording 'Ao Vivo' from 1975. Later, they regrouped around 2000 and released a new CD, named "A Re-Volta", in 2002.The sound of VELUDO could be described as a progressive rock with heavy tendencies and predominant organ, but also elements of symphonic prog and krautrock. However a Brasilian prog momentum is also present, since one can here OS MUTANTES influences. The original band members were Nelsinho Laranjeiras on bass, Elias Mizrahi on keyboards (he suggested the band's name to be shortened), Paul de Castro on guitar and Gustavo Schroeter on drums. This was a Brazilian septet including Mario Neto (guitar/vocals), Sergio Villarim (keyboards), Delto Simas (bass), Marco Veríssimo (drums), Marcus Moura (flute/accordion), Mr. Paul (percussion) and Jane Duboc (vocals). A rich and symphonic music with wonderful keyboards and a very nice flute which enlightens the compositions full of interest and detours. A few female vocal interventions complete to enrich this great work. The band surpasses their influences: LOCANDA DEL FATE, PFM, QUELLA VECCHIA LOCANDA and ILLUSION. They made two albums entitled "Depois Do Fim" ('83) and "Sete Cidades" ('99). In '95 Rarity Records released their first LP on CD with the addition of a bonus track (due to appear in their second LP). The CD "Depois Do Fim" is one of the highlights of the South-American Prog rock: a compelling blend of varied keyboards (vintage synthesizers, strings, piano, organ), skillful acoustic and electric guitar and strong Portuguese vocals. The nine compositions (four instrumental) sound warm and elaborate with many changing atmospheres. CASA DAS MÁQUINAS (meaning 'house of wonders') are a mid-70's Brazilian band from São Paulo borne out of the disenchantment of two musicians from glam/dance pop band OS INCRÍVEIS, namely drummer/percussionnist Netinho and guitarist/vocalist Aroldo who wanted to take a less commercial route. Recruiting three other musicians, they recorded 3 albums between 1974 and 1977; a compilation disk was also released in 2000. Their material is mostly heavy, bluesy hard rock with complex arrangements and thick guitar leads. The vocals are in Portuguese. Their debut and self-titled album, released in 1974, is plain old hard rock. Their second, "Lar de Maravilhas" (1975), however, is considered a national prog classic. Donning a slick production, it incorporates the intensity of the first album with more sophisticated elements such as stronger melodies, better arrangements and an emphasis on spacious, multi-layered symphonic keyboards (particularly the synths). It is a strange collection of tunes in that it ranges from superb symphonic flights to some very banal pieces. Their third album, "Casa de Rock" (1976), reverts to their more primitive hard rock style, featuring two drummers and no more spacey keyboards. The compilation CD "Pérolas" is made up of 16 tracks taken from the second and third albums (tapes of the first are lost forever). Brazilian act MOTO PERPETUO was formed in 1973, instigated by Guilherme Arantes (piano, vocals) and Claudio Lucci (guitars, cello, violin, vocals) got to know each other at the faculty of architecture and urbanism. Egydio Conde (guitars, vocals), Diogenes Burani (percussion, vocals) and Gerson Tatini (bass, vocals) were added to the line-up, and in early 1974 they hit the recording studio. Their self-titled debut album was released shortly after. By 1975 Arantes decided that he would rather venture forth as a solo artist, and he made himself a rather successful career on his own. Moto Perpetuo disbanded, although a brief epilogue to their career came in 1981 when three former members issued an album under the moniker São Quixote, with Arantes appearing as a guest musician. The sole recording by this outfit featuring O Terco founding member Jorge Amiden, this gorgeous orchestrated folk psych obscurity, like so much of the best stuff coming out of Brazil back in those days, is like a full body immersion in a warm balm. Buttressed by a folkloric acoustic undergirding and lacquered with swells of orchestration and drifting high harmony vocals, the watchword here is dreamy; Karma only occasionally gathering the wherewithal to rock out.
