Paciana Story - Paciana Story 1975

Paciana story was a mid-70's Italian project, following an idea of Dalton's keyboardist Temistocle Reduzzi and journalist Luciano Capoferri to musically perform the story of Vincenzo ''Paci'' Paciana, a mythical figure of Bergamo during the 18th century, who was the Robin Hood of the area, stealing from rich and giving the poor, until he died falling from a bridge in the Brembo river, chased by the police. The studio project featured five additional musicians/singers, among them Dalton's guitarist Aronne Cereda and the album ''Opera Pop'' was recorded in 1975 at the recording studio I Raminghi's bassist Franco Mussita. This is very delicate and romantic Folk Rock with plenty of acoustic textures and a few proggy overtones, while Reduzzi always supports the music with his synths, electric and acoustic piano. Lots of male and female vocals present the thrilling bio of Paci Paciana in some very good vocal arrangements with warm singing. The music, while remaining fairly soft throughout, has an inner atmospheric content, mainly due to Reduzzi's symphonic keyboards and jazzy electric piano, while half of them contain the smooth electric guitar touch of Cereda or even some ethnic vibes through the sax and clarinet of Ferdinando Ghisleni. Of course the main driving forces remain the folky textures and the album has a strong singer/songwriter feel as a whole, but Reduzzi's obsession to constantly use his keys adds always a light proggy feeling.A couple of tracks are also close to DALTON's sound like the excellent closer ''Salto dal ponte'' or the keyboard-drenched ''Tema condutore''.Paciana story toured the theaters for some years, featuring over a dozen of musicians and actors in a very good Folk/Pop/Prog opera, that definitely should have been a great experience if caught live. The nice CD reissue by BTF makes the album easily approachable and this comes warmly recommended to all fans of light Progressive Rock, Folk Rock or melodic Italian Prog.

Pangea - Invasori 1976

Pangea was really just a name given to the solo project of Mauro Paoluzzi, a producer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. He produced, among others, the two albums by the jazz-rock outfit Madrugada. Their bassist Billi Zanelli and keyboardist Gianfranco Pinto returned the favor here by joining this "band" called Pangea. They are joined by Paoluzzi's wife Luciana on vocals and Claudio Pascoli on saxophone. Released (or nearly so, as noted) in 1976 "Invasori" is one strange fish. The album is a sound painting, an avant-garde work covering a variety of styles. Very calm and very spacey but a little different of classic Italian bands. They made a different vein and separate the classical music from progressive rock. It's more pure calm rock with calm guitar arrangements and calm keyboards. It's very balanced with good sound. Lyrics are in Italian and very balanced too.

Periferia del Mondo was formed in Rome in 1996 by woodwind player Alessandro Papotto (BANCO del Mutuo Soccorso), guitarist Giovanni Tommasi and bassist Claudio Braico, who were soon joined by drummer Tony Zito and keyboardist Bruno Vegliante. The band has performed several shows in Italy and abroad, and released two albums in CD and LP format: "In ogni Luogo, In ogni tempo" (2000) and "Un Milione di Voci" (2002), both featuring important guests such as Mauro Pagani, Vittorio Nocenzi, Francesco di Giacomo, Massimo Alviti, Luca Sapio, and many others. The two albums gained large appreciation and enthusiastic reviews from radios and papers all around the world. Periferia del Mondo also appears on two live productions: the CD "Omaggio a Demetrio Stratos" (2000) and the DVD "Gouveia Art Rock 2004" recorded in Portugal during their exhibition at the Gouveia Art Rock Festival together with Richard Sinclair Band and Isildurs. Premiata Forneria Marconi - Per Un Amico 1972

The pioneer of Italian Progressive groups, PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI (PFM for short) is one of the leaders of the 70s prog movement. PFM developed a style which is uniquely Italian while maintaining links with the rest of the prog world. A lyrical, romantic and delicate music, full of fineness. A great melodic and instrumental richness, sumptuous compositions and arrangements. Sometimes compared with the early KING CRIMSON, the group had its own musical personality, with its elegant music.  Their first album under the new name was Storia di un Minuto. They followed that one rather quickly with Per un Amico, which caught the attention of ELP's Greg Lake who invited them to visit London. During that visit, the group met Pete Sinfield (King Crimson, Roxy Music). Sinfield was so taken with the group that he decided to come on board writing lyrics and producing them. The result of that collaboration was Photos of Ghosts, but it was really only an English reworking of Per un Amico. Due to difficulties the British press was having with the name of the group, it was then shortened to PFM. The group released a true third album in L'isola di Niente. When it was set loose upon England, it was entitled The World Become the World. In the mid-'70s, Cook, a live album was released. It was renamed Live in U.S.A. for its Italian release. Their next release, after extensive touring and a short break, was Chocolate King. It became the first album to only feature an English version, the group having had done both English and Italian renditions of previous releases. The album, although not a huge commercial success, did generate enough interest to sign the band to Elektra Asylum Records. The next album, Jet Lag, was released in 1977 and was the last U.S. release, as they decided to return to Italy to concentrate on their home roots. They released Passpartù as the first album in their new homeland adventure. They eventually hooked up with RCA Records and released Suonare Suonare on that label. They followed that up with Come Ti Va In Riva Alla Città. The group waited about ten years before doing another album, with Ulisse coming in 1997. 2000 saw the release of Serendipity.

Panna Fredda - Uno 1971

One of those legendary, but so obscure albums, "Panna Fredda Uno" is mostly based on a very effective guitar-keyboards interplay. The arrangements are great with lots organ and excellent guitar. Classical influences are evident, but the music contains a lot of melodic and a instrumental research. The voice is good, the lyrics original and the album has no weak points. A great album sometimes evoking EGG or CARAVAN!Recorded in 1970, Panna Fredda's lone work is one of the earliest pioneers of the ISP genre, one of the trailblazers of the distinct style of festive experimentation that would characterize so many great Italian bands. It's really an overlooked title in the Italian progressive rock universe. Heavy and dark with a distinct baroque twist and an emphasis on exploration, "Uno" was right there with other first wave titles from Orme, The Trip, and Osanna. The origins of Panna Fredda date back to 1966 Rome and the Italian beat when members were playing in a group called I Figli Del Sole. These nightclub gigs evolved into a 6-piece funk/R and B/brass outfit called Vun Vun. Reluctant leader and composer/guitarist/vocalist Angelo Giardinelli professed some boredom with the Italian scene of the time and wanted to move things to a rock quartet, but some touchy band politics and the mood of the local music scene stood in his way. He had to proceed covertly to form Panna Fredda behind the backs of the horn guys to realize his vision without hurting the feelings of friends. Not everyone in the group was convinced, thinking Angelo crazy for wanting to chase sounds that the public was not ready for. But there was no turning back: after hearing some albums a friend gave him from the likes of Vanilla Fudge, Hendrix, The Moodies, and Floyd, Giardinelli could not go back to playing it safe. The band made contact with a small label called Vedette who were looking for another hit machine to replace I Pooh, who were not delivering to the label's satisfaction. The first single was written by popular Italian musicians of the day but found success which led to the first band-penned singles early in the summer of 1970. More line-up changes would ensue caused by military service and marriage but the band was stoked for the moment and began to record their full length album. The new Panna Fredda was determined to lay down the brash and inventive new material coming from Giardinelli despite the label's plea for commercial singles. The evening before their first session they stayed up all night nervously going over all the details of what they hoped to accomplish. The results would be an artistic success to the band, their fans, and the music press in Italy. But to their horror I would imagine, the label balked at releasing the album. Though ready to go in 1970, Vedette shelved their album and the band hit the road playing to enthusiastic crowds. The label finally succumbed to public pressure and put out the record in 1971 as the band continued playing some of the Italian festivals of the day. But the usual suspects had doomed the band. There was no promotion for the album, no second album offered, and eventually the band split up.

Pholas Dactylus - Concerto Delle Menti 1973

PHOLAS DACTYLUS was an Italian avant-garde group in the beginning of the seventies. The group consisted of Paolo Carelli (vocals), Eleino Colledet (guitar), Valentino Galbusera (keyboards), Maurizio Pancotti (keyboards), Rinaldo Linati (bass) and Giampiero Nava (drums). The guitarist Eleino Colledet was the founder of the group. The most interesting detail in their music is the vocals that are not sung but spoken. The recited lyrics are also the main reason why this group is often considered avant-garde. The music itself is traditional Italian progressive but it continuously has moments of avant-garde, jazz, Krautrock and jamming. This makes the music a blend of many influences. The music isn't exactly like any other Italian group of that time but the overall atmosphere is rather similar to the heavy progressive Italian groups of the seventies. The only album "Concerto Delle Menti" was released in 1973 on Magma records. This album consists of only two tracks that were divided in both sides of the LP. The group disbanded after this album and apparently none of the members continued their careers as professional musicians.

Planetarium - Infinity 1971

PLANETARIUM was one of those 70's Italian progressive groups that made only one album and then disappeared. PLANETARIUM is also a real mystery group in the Italian scene. Their line-up has remained unknown till this day. The only name that is mentioned is the composer A. Ferrari to whom all the tracks are credited. They released only one album called "Infinity". Classical influences are very evident in this album. The music is reminiscent of the Italian style but with more classical feel to it."Infinity", released in 1971, is a compilation of eight songs that flow nicely together. The first half is mellow with lots of acoustic guitar, piano and mellotron and the second half is a bit more frantic and experimental.

The Psycheground Group - Psycheground 1971

A sweet psychedelic set, but one with very mysterious origins — originally recorded as a sound library session, by a group that was really the better-known Nuova Idea! The album’s definitely got a vibe that fits its sound library roots -all instrumental, with a bit less bravado than most psyche albums of this type - almost more of a focus on the rhythms, which stretch out strongly amidst the Hammond and guitar solos on the set. The whole thing’s still pretty rockish, but also has a deeper sensitivity to the overall sound too - a quality that’s partly due to production efforts of Giampiero Reverberi.

Persimfans - Quinta Dimensione 1978

One of the stranger additions the RPI team have had to deal with is this collaboration from Genova. PERSIMFANS was formed in 1978 by a group of music students. Their name is an abbreviation of a conductorless Russian symphony orchestra - Pervyi Simfonicheskii Ansambl that performed between 1922 and 1932.This unusual formation released one album titled "Quinta Dimensione" in 1978 which is an atmospheric blend of the avant-garde, electronic, symphonic and classical. The original album featured spoken word vocals of wizard TONY BINARELLI which are missing from the later CD reissue. Five Tarot cards were also presented in the original release.

La Pentola di Papin - Zero-7 1977

La Pentola Di Papin was a short-lived band from Sondrio, formed in 1976 and releasing one album before breaking up soon after. Some have noted this was one of the last true Italian Prog albums, which is of course nonsense. RPI never ended but continued to evolve as did progressive rock in general. What they actually mean is that Zero 7 is one of the last albums to sound like 1971. For while this album was released at the time of Jet Lag and Locanda Delle Fate, it sounds more like the psych-hard rock stew of the early classic period. Whether the band intended to revisit the period so intentionally is anyone's guess. As my friend John notes in his Italian Prog blog there are two ways you can approach Zero 7. The cynical way is to note that the album was already 6 years out of style the day it was released, the other way it to kick back and enjoy a late entry to the early classic period sound. Like many RPI bands these guys were obviously fans of the organ-heavy hard rock sound in the Deep Purple school and there isn't a whole lot of deviation, complexity, or experimentation. Instead the sound lies somewhere between New Trolls, psych rock and Italian pop. The songs are dominated by swirling Hammond organ and squalling fuzzy psych guitar throughout, often trading off long solos or doubling up for a heavy sound. The bass and drums support the early 70s love fest with a very warm, out front, and live performance sound. You can just visualize this rhythm section jamming in the studio, probably a small room with a lot of sweat and smoke going into the mics. The tracks themselves are on the basic side of hard prog bands, not too complex, mostly song-oriented with decent vocals and occasional longer instrumental sections. "Una Vecchia Storia" has a nice Rick Wright piano homage with chords resembling Great Gig In The Sky. There's nothing wrong with the songs per se, they just aren't particularly adventurous, though they certainly rock at times. The less than dynamic production works to their advantage here by giving them a bit more bar room authenticity. The stereo separation is not subtle at times; someone was having fun panning the sound back and forth.

Piero Ezio e Tino - Mi Chiamo Piero 1972

This was an Italiian trio, formed by musicians from Voghera, namely Piero Cairo (keyboards, vocals), Ezio Cristiani (vocals, guitar, flute) and Tino Negri (vocals, bass). They released a single album in 1972 on Rare Records, a division of the French Barclay, that had an office in Milan. All compositions are written by Cairo and two more persons under the names of G.Bertero and V.Buonassisi, while the sound engineer was Gianluigi Pezzera, who performed later under the Le Groupe X moniker. The album features also guest performances by Roberto Ferracin on organ and Sergio Chiesa on drums.Named ''Carta d'identità n°1: mi chiamo Piero'' (''Identity card: my name is Piero'') and considering Cairo's deep involvement in the compositions, there is a strong possibility the album to have an autobiographical character, divided in 12 short pieces. Sound wise this is somewhere between soft Symphonic Rock and typical period Singer/Songwriter styling with some Library Music injections. The music is heavily based on keyboards and acoustic instruments, having an slight folky environment, flavored by discreet Classical and Fusion influences. Harpsichord, piano, organ and synthesizer appear occasionally and co-exist next to the acoustic guitars and flutes to produce soft, emotional music with limited instrumental parts but some very good singing lines.

I Pooh - Un Po' Del Nostro Tempo Migliore 1975

I Pooh, or Pooh for short, are like the Rolling Stones of Italian popular music. One of music's longest continuously running acts, they formed in Bologna in 1964. Like other groups of the 'beat' generation their music consisted of American and English pop covers sung in Italian. The original band was composed of # Valerio Negrini (Drums)Bob Gillot (Keyboards), Gilberto Faggioli ( Bass Guitar ), Mario Goretti (Guitar), and Mauro Bertoli (Guitar). As the 60's wore down and the Italian music scene began to find it's own voice Pooh gravitated toward a more... melodic pop. The group had some line-up changes during these years with the the definitive Pooh line up taking form. Roby Facchinetti (voice and keyboards) joined in 1966 replacing Gillot. Red Canzian (voice and electric bass joined 1973 replacing Riccardo Fogli who had replaced Faggioli in 1966. In 1967 , Mauro Bertoli left the group. In September 1968, Dodi Battaglia (voice and guitars) joined the group, when Mario Goretti left the band. Finally in 1971, following Valerio's departure, the band recruited Stefano D'Orazio, the drummer of the Naufraghi. The line-up of Facchinetti, Battaglia, D'Orazio, and Canzianhas been together since 1973 with exception of some albums in the early to mid 70's staying in the vein of pop music. Much of the Pooh's music is not really of interest of proggresive rock fans. However there was a period when even the most successful of the purveyors of melodic pop where drawn in the progressive rock boom that swept all of Italy in the early 70's. The Pooh's detour into prog was brought on by the addition of Canzian who had a keen interest in progressive rock and had been guitarist of Capsicum Red before taking over the bass chair in Pooh. Pooh released a series of albums in the 70's that are of keen interest to those who have a deep interest in progressive rock. In fact.... some of their albums have been hailed as 'masterpieces' OF Italian progressive rock and for years were HIGHLY sought after by collectors of Italian progressive rock recordings of the 70's in the dark days before many of the albums were available again for us relatively easily. Albums such as Opera Prima, Parsifal, and Un po' del nostro tempo migliore are where the prog fan's should look first.

Preghiera Di Sasso - Preghiera Di Sasso 1975

The band Preghiera di Sasso formed in 1971 in Abruzzo and were an active live band on the local scene, even taking part in some large festivals of the day. It is important to keep in mind that there are two different sets of songs present here: the vinyl '75 tracks and the bonus '72 tracks. The earlier material is more aggressive and feisty, period prog rock instrumental jamming from start to finish. You certainly can hear an affinity for Cream's approach as they attack in power-trio style with wailing electric guitar, big booming bass, and muscular drumming-with no vocals or keyboards.  Here’s controlled chord progressions of "La Macchina del Tempo" displaying a lighter moment before the absolutely furious opening of "La Paura." Another good comparison would be Flea's hard rocking "Topi" album which also reveled in the pleasures of the rock jam, for the sake of it. This is just three guys losing themselves in their wailing. Things changed a bit on the 1975 tracks where gears shift towards a jazzier approach similar to what Flea did moving on to Etna I suppose. Electric piano and saxophone come into the mix and the sound quality is a bit improved.

Procession - Fiaba 1974

PROCESSION formed in Turin in 1972. They came out that same year with an album titled "Frontiera" for the small Help label (an RCA subsidiary that also released QUELLA VECCHIA LOCANDA's first album). This record is particularly interesting for the lyrics that dealt with immigration. Musically the style is rather acoustic; a lot of space is given to guitars. It can be easily described as a hard prog LP. After two years of silence, the band reappeared with a new line-up (Capra, Girardi and Capello were substituted by bass player Paolo D'Angelo and horns player Maurizio Gianotti), and a new recording deal, this time it's Fonit that releases their second album "Fiaba", their best work.  A very pretty album in Italian Progressive Rock classic vein. The musical instruments that most stand out are the guitar and saxophone. It has moments of brilliance with a unique sound. The flute in rare moments give a context of classic progressive in Italian vein. Lyrics are in Italian with a tone of voice similar in many bands of this decade. A few guest artists partecipated, such as Francesco Froggio Francica (from RACCOMANDATA RICEVUTA RITORNO), on drums and percussions, singer Silvana Aliotta (from CIRCUS 2000) and Ettore Vigo (DELIRIUM's keyboard player). The album has an avantgarde style, much more than in the previous work, with some interesting jazz inspirations. The very good flute and sax and the fine voice of singer Gianfranco Gaza have to be pointed out. Despite a good live activity PROCESSION never gained the success they deserved and though they released two albums they disappeared without trace.

Pinguin - Der Grosse Rote Vogel 1972

Original release 1972 and recorded Löwe-Studio, Köln (Sept-Nov 1971).Originally released by Zebra records and the sound is strongly keyboard-dominated (organist Volker Plitz composed all the tracks), but there are enough furious guitar leads to satisfy the psych-lover. Similar to other Germans prog outfits like Frumpy, Subject Esq. - Freak EmporiumPinguin's only release, though they had previously made a record under the name of Talix. This is organ-based prog, though with enough guitar leads and saxophone jamming and flute breaks to keep everybody happy. The vocals are in German. All in all this is a very appealing album, highly recommended, an unheralded Krautrock classic! However, Pinguin's sole album for some odd reason avoided the reissue (even non-legit), and it seems unfair, since many far less talented bands (like Grave or Arktis to name but a few) has been already re-released on CD in beautiful packages with archival bonus-tracks etc.The band began in early 1970s as Talix and released one album under this logo, entitled Spuren. With switching from Vogue to the just founded label Zebra (actually a "progressive" sub-label of Polydor), the band changed their name to Pinguin to record the album Der Grosse Rote Vogel in 1972.It was the first LP released by Zebra. Pinguin's sound is strongly keyboard-dominated (organist Volker Plitz composed all the tracks), but there are enough furious guitar leads to satisfy the psych-lover. The music is basically pretty far from typical German kraut-rock, instead it reminds of more "international-sounding" German bands like Frumpy, Subject Esq. and maybe even Faithful Breath. Vocals are pretty strong and though I've been told by my German friend. Mellow lyrical organ-driven parts alternate with heavy guitar outbursts and beautiful flute passages. "Der Blaue Wind" is a pleasant melodic ballad, while "Die Angst" is filled with irresistible rocking energy. Overall, this is a wonderful LP with all the right moves.

Picchio dal Pozzo - Picchio dal Pozzo 1976

PICCHIO DAL POZZO are considered to be one of the very few "Canterbury" inspired bands that emerged from Italy's fertile 1970's progressive rock musical scene. The sextet known as "Picchio dal Pozzo" surges forth via romantically melodic overtones, swiftly implemented time signatures and jazzy interplay in concert with the proverbial peaks, valleys, knotty twists and circuitous turns. With vocal performances reminiscent, in part, of a cross between Robert Wyatt and Jon Anderson, and excellent keyboard work by Aldo De Scalzi, the album more than earns a place amongst the great releases of the late 1970s Canterbury scene.  "Camere Zimmer Rooms" is a must for all those enamoured of both Italian prog as well as the Canterbury music scene.
